In this volume is told the genuine true story of the first crusaders. It begins with their setting out, and it ends with the death of the last survivor. Almost a thousand years have passed since then, and the lives of these men are known to us only by the chronicles of their days. Upon these original chronicles the story in this book is based. It does not deal with the legends that grew up after the crusades. It is not history revised and re-written. It is the real firsthand account story of a dozen men, most of them leaders, who started out on that long journey - what they saw on the road, and what they did, and what befell them.

The Crusades Iron Men and Saints eBook Harold Lamb Reviews

  • As many reviewers here have mentioned, this is a work of popular as opposed to scholarly history, but it is nonetheless most excellent. Lamb himself is a well-researched scholar who has personally visited many of the sites and locations he describes, but he tailors his writing about this fascinating historical period for a wider audience than strictly academicians. Starting with a brief overview of the feudal world of that time, moving through the Pope's announcement of the need to save Christians under assault in the Holy Land, and tracing the route taken and the people involved, Lamb takes his reader on a fascinating journey, almost as if one is personally marching along. Lamb hits all the highlights, mentions all the big players and embellishes his retelling with excerpts from primary sources and eye witness accounts. He is able to maintain an essentially objective and impartial viewpoint as he describes the clash of religion and worldview as West meets East, showing how events likely appeared from both sides. Lamb avoids cluttering up his text with too many footnotes and arcane references, although there are some extensive Notes at the end for those interested in further research. For someone accustomed to learning history through reading fictionalized accounts, straight history itself is in this case just as entertaining and rewarding to read. Highly recommended.
  • When I was a teenager, my father gave me this book for reading. I loved the book because I love History and I found that it was very easy to read, because the author wrote it as if it was a historical romance, very fluent language and comprehensive descriptions of the scenery and the historical facts. When I got older, this book remained in his shelf and now I found it again, but after so many years the pages were yellowish and missing. I was devastated because it was one of my favorite books about the Crusades. Then I found in the book , used but in very good condition, Hardcover , large print and amazingly preserved. I bought it and again I immerged in the conflict of Sarracens and Christians during the historical period that is known as the Crusades. The edition of this book is pre second world war, so many of the facts that Harold Lamb may have changed after new researches in this area, in the beggining of the 21th century. But the extremely good narrative style and the way that the author can place the reader in the context of the century that he is describing is is not surpassed by the modern history authors. I think that is because he did not intend to write to scholars but to the average public, so the description about Urban II call to arms in 1192 , he describing how the good looking pope was preaching the crusade to the multitude in France, or the meticulous descriptions of Saladin and Richard the Lion-Heart are so very good that they seem like a historical romance you SEE the characters so well that it seems like a movie. But all the facts and persons described by him are real persons and the facts are all historical facts! A note, if you are asking yourself if the character of Balian of Ibelin(Orlando Bloom)(from the movie "Kingdom of Heaven"-Ridley Scott) is real, check this book. The speech that the knight gave to Saladin before the surrender of Jerusalem in the end of the movie appears in this book almost to his last words! Newer books about the Crusades did not give me any insight about this character and I thougth that he was a fictional character, but when I reread this book Harold Lamb cited his name and his speech, more than 50 years before the movie, so I now know that he was a real historical character. The rythm of the narrative is fluid, easy to follow and the character descriptions would make a romancist envious!
To conclude this book is old, it was not updated recently because it was written before the second world war, but it is extremely good, very easy to read and very interesting, the part about the europeans and also the part about the Islam. It would merit a reimpression.
  • This is an older book, but it is so well researched and well written that it could be describing the current fiasco in the Middle Eastern Islamic world is nothing new. It has existed in Islam from its inception.
  • See my earlier review of this book. I bought this version as a gift for my grandson. He was able to use what he learned here in his Medieval history class to good effect. He enjoyed it, too.
  • Good blend of history and story-telling. Harold Lamb at his best, balanced presentation about all players and their motivations.
  • Harold Lamb was a master craftsman and an old school story teller. This introduction to the epic event of the Middle Ages will be devoured by readers. This is a terrific way to get young readers interested .
  • The hardcover Crusades by Harold Lamb is is good shape.

However, I was disappointed that it did not include "The Sword of Islam" as does my paperback copy I bought this to replace.
  • A wonderful book on the Crusades rather famous because of its author. I would have preferred a paperback for the convenience in reading it.
